Thursday Evening ATM Class

Starting in September, join Ron Renz and I for a weekly Awareness Through Movement class at the beautiful space of 108 Yoga on the waterfront.

September 9 – December 31, 2010.

Time: 7:08 – 8:08 pm, Thursdays.

Location: 108 Yoga is in the Brewery Market, 1496 Lower Water St. Suite 411. Enter via the South Arch. See the details here.

Registration information: You can pay by class as a drop-in, or by ten-class pass. The best deal is an unlimited access pass if you also do yoga and other great classes at 108. I think you’ll find a good synergy between the Feldenkrais classes and the studio’s approach to wellness and vitality through yoga! See details here.

108 Yoga offers you the convenience of paying on-line, and of booking your spot in the class ahead of time (drop-ins still welcome).

Parking is on the streets–and it’s free in the evenings.

Vocal overtoning – August 2010

Your voice — its strength and timbre — is acutely sensitive to your postural habits. This series of Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lessons explores how you resonate your whole self with your voice, and how you support the process with your breath. As you discover your own rich timbre and the internal shapes and spaces you can create, the experience may lead to unexpected results!

You can attend the full month of classes on the theme for the full experience, or drop in as your schedule permits. Contact the Yoga Loft at 429-3330 for info.

Last class this week; New location for September

This week (Wednesday the 28th @ 7:15 pm) is the last class at the Yoga Loft–join us for a special “transitions” ATM tailored for the occasion. A celebration of the Loft ensues at the Wooden Monkey.

I’m pleased to let you know that we have a new location for September.

Ron Renz and I will continue our weekly Awareness Through Movement class–now on Thursdays–at the beautiful space of 108 Yoga on the waterfront.

For online class participants, I’ll start recording again in the fall (I had a few battery failures this spring).

Bad joke alert! Local regulars know I like to joke that Feldenkrais could adopt the Alexander Keith’s slogan. The local brewery used to advertise itself by the line “those who like it, like it a lot.” As someone “from away,” I never really got that as a slogan–Keith’s is the choice of alcoholics? Is that it? In any case, here I am, starting my 11th season of ATM classes in the historical brewery establishment of Mr. Alexander Keith himself. Cheers, everyone!

Feldenkrais News – July 2010

Two news items from Halifax–

1) I’ve got a workshop this weekend at the Yoga Loft, 1:30-3:30 on Sunday (July 11). The theme is “sitting cross-legged” — in this pair of Feldenkrais lessons, you will find some surprising connections through your spine and shoulders that enable your pelvis and legs to rest more comfortably in cross-legged sitting. Registration in advance is required. Contact the Yoga Loft at 429-3330 to register, preferably by tomorrow! (Thursday before the workshop.)

2) An era is coming to a end. I’m sad to say that The Yoga Loft is closing at the end of July. It’s been a wonderful space to teach for the last 5+ years, with great energy and a supportive community. I’d like to thank Robert Webber for his years of hosting the Wednesday evening Feldenkrais class in its various configurations, and wish him the best in his next (ad)ventures. I’m teaching tonight and the last Wednesday night of July, and Ron the two in between. We’d love to see you there (7:15-8:15).

Ron and I are taking August off, and working on options for the fall. We’ll let you know.

Wednesday Evening ATM Class

Special Note: After 5+ years of happy times at the Yoga Loft, the space is closing at the end of July 2010. This is your last month to join us in the current space. There will be no classes in August, and you can watch this space (or subscribe to the newsletter–Feldenkrais in Halifax in the right sidebar) to find out about classes for the fall.

I teach an Awareness Through Movement class together with Ron Renz Wednesday evenings, 7:15 – 8:15 p.m., at the Yoga Loft, Suite 301, 5663 Cornwallis St. (off the Commons–see Google maps). Ron and I alternate months teaching, and there is a theme for each month of classes. Check here to see what’s coming up.

You can join any time! Feldenkrais is cumulative but not linear: you don’t need to do lessons in a certain order, though the lessons do feed into and develop from one another.

Drop in and punch cards are available. Call the Yoga Loft at 429-3330 for more information about costs.

You can dress in ordinary, comfortable clothing, and you may like to bring a blanket or mat. There are some available at the studio if you prefer not to bring your own.

Smart feet—happy hips – June 2010

Subtle differentiation of the toes and arches of the feet send new messages of freedom to the hips—and finer control of the hips and pelvis wake up the natural capacity of your feet to respond intelligently to the ground. Through this month’s series of Feldenkrais lessons addressing the hips and feet, you’ll find yourself feeling more grounded and supported by your legs—and your hips (and everything above) will thank you for it.

This series may be a good complement to the June Yoga Help series on working on SI joint and hip pain.

You can attend the full month of classes on the theme for the full experience, or drop in as your schedule permits. Contact the Yoga Loft at 429-3330 for info and registration.

May Feldenkrais in Halifax–and on-line

Hello everyone,

On Sunday, May 9 I’ll be repeating the theme Breath, Posture, and Voice in a two-hour mini-workshop at the Yoga Loft, 1:30 – 3:30 pm. Phone 429-3330 to register before the end of the week preceding. It’s a theme we’ve done before, but the lessons will be all new.

In this pair of Feldenkrais lessons, we will examine the subtle relationship of how we use the vocal tract and diaphragm, to find freedom and support through the neck, spine, and hips. In turn, finding the support of your skeleton—the essence of “good posture”—will transform your breathing and voice.

And in the on-line Feldenkrais world, Falk Feddersen’s Open ATM project has a new home and new content at www.openatm.org. It seems Falk himself is progressing through his own training and is now posting. Scroll down the page to Falk Feddersen PhD and click to open the list of his recordings.

Spring and Summer workshops and classes

As we move reversibly in and out of Spring in Nova Scotia (that’s a lame Feldenkrais joke), here’s an update on what’s coming up in the near future at the Yoga Loft ), and what’s been posted online at kinesophics.ca recently.

Upcoming Themes of the Month at the Yoga Loft

Finding length – April 2010 theme

Effort shortens the body, restricts breathing, and creates wear and tear on joints. Efficient and accurate action feels effortless and creates length. In this month’s series of Feldenkrais lessons, you’ll find the ways to distribute work more evenly around your core, feel the support of your skeleton, and thereby let yourself lengthen rather than waste energy in tightening and shortening yourself when you act. Find the taller, lighter version of yourself that’s hidden underneath your habitual aches and pains.

Feldenkrais Workshop this weekend!

A Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement workshop, Sunday March 7 2010, 1 – 3 pm.

At any moment, we act intentionally, and at the same time are supported by the “vegetative” processes, such as breathing, digesting, circulating blood. The autonomic and the intentional are integrated in action—the more sensitively these processes co-exist and support one another, the more vital, calm, and energetic we can be. In this pair of Feldenkrais lessons, we’ll explore the integration of breath and action, and the integration of rhythmic action of the sphincter muscles with intentional movement of the whole body.

At the Yoga Loft, Suite 301, 5663 Cornwallis St. (off the Commons–see Google maps). Advance registration required. Call 429-3330 for more information about costs and to register.

Active sitting – February 2010

In a reversal of millennia of evolutionary development, human beings now spend most of their work (and leisure) time sitting. This “intensive passivity” is a kind of marathon in terms of the demands it places on us—but we don’t see it that way. Sitting seems obvious, the easiest and laziest thing to do. In this month of classes we’ll find the resources in our feet, pelvis, and spine to sit truly effortlessly, while maintaining our freedom to act from the core. This month’s series of Feldenkrais lessons will be especially helpful for anyone who spends work or leisure time at a desk or computer, for those who sit to meditate, and for musicians who play or sing in sitting.

This series may also be a good follow-up to the January Yoga Help series on working at your desk.

You can attend the full month of classes on the theme for the full experience, or drop in as your schedule permits. Contact the Yoga Loft at 429-3330 for info and registration.
